Setting of a heritage asset

The London Plan, published by the Mayor of London in March 2016, suggests that the setting of a heritage asset is: ‘…the surrounding in which a heritage asset is experienced. Its extent is not fixed and may change as the asset and its surroundings evolve. Elements of a setting may make a positive or negative contribution to the significance of an asset, may affect the ability to appreciate that significance or may be neutral.’

This definition can also be found in The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in 2021.

This definition was repeated in the revised NPPF in 2024.
